KAMIKAZE PEEP SQUAD FAQ, Version 2.0
                     Updated 4-14-98
(previous version dated 12-9-97...I've been busy)

This FAQ, like any other FAQ appearing in alt.fan.tom-servo
(currently none, because the FQA is an Eff-Que-A, not a Eff-A-Que) is
wholly subjective. If you have a different opinion about how the Kamikaze
Peep Squad developed, I urge you to post it. Likewise, if you feel that
you were not mentioned enough herein.

This FAQ originally mentioned some nonsense about future versions including
the "First Peep" of each KPS member. Well, forget I said all that, okay?
Like I don't have enough to do already, sheesh!

As usual, corrections and amplifications of the following data are
appreciated. All misspellings contained herein (and there are a lot of
them) are the responsibility of the original posters quoted.

And off we go:

KAMIKAZE PEEP SQUAD FAQ, Version 1.0

The Kamikaze Peep Squad grew out of the growing awareness on the SF.TV
newsgroups that the telepathic characters appearing in the TV series
Babylon 5 were actually somehow related to a particular type of
sugar-coated marshmallow candy. It has been known for years that these
candies (known as "peeps") were telepathic, but the connection that they
were being referred to in B5 whenever someone talked about telepaths in
general, and telepathic *weapons* in specific, was not directly made
     until the following post appeared:

No, no...he spelled that wrong. He meant "peeps"...those
imitation marshmellow things that people get at Easter. They
were the greatest weapon in Sheridan's arsenal!

John Keegan

Keegan's post sparked the awareness of the SF newsgroup posters, and the
subject immediately mutated into two different threads, "Re: The
Peep-Human War" and "Re: Thats TEEPS!". Both grew independently, but
     simultaneously.

The initial "Re: The Peep-Human War" post was written by Sleepbot ZZ09.4.
Although the resulting thread was short lived, it was fully developed,
conceptually. As you can see from the headers, the Star Trek groups were
elided, but alt.religion.kibology was added, thus ensuring a healthy
     growth medium.

yeah, i don't care what Ford/Boche/Cronan/Robert thinks... the whole
war between the Humans and the Peeps is something we can really look
forward to in season 5.

to think that Clark was foolish enough to put Peeps into positions of
power. deep down inside, we all know how hard it is to tell what
they're really made of. and remember how they tend to stick together
early on but then end up being all stiff and hard in the long run.
not to mention their incredible lifespan.

not sure if i'm the only one who's noticed, but it seems those Peeps
are starting to come out even during Halloween and Christmas as of
late. what's next? New Years? Independence Day? not to promote a
climate of fear or anything, but HOLY CHRIST -- WHAT'RE WE GONNA DO?

see, there's one thing from Sheridan's Vision(tm) that i never
understood... the image of a hand coming out of a sun. and i do
remember that Sheridan is referred to as 'the Hand' in the same
Vision(tm). and, according to the Arc, our sun is supposed to explode
in 1 megayear.

now, as we all know, if there's one thing Peeps can't survive, it's
heat... well, that and being dunked in a pitcher of Coca-Cola
overnight, but even Gummi Bears are succeptible to that (thank
goodness). perhaps sol-boom was initiated by Sheridan and his minions
as a last resort.

mmm. some bitter-sweet food for thought.

One of the posts following Sleepbot ZZ09.4's was
     <01bcee3c$861801e0$ee43facc@HE-HDNW01> by "Leah Verre"
     It essentially quoted Sleepbot ZZ09.4's
     post entirely, adding the following:

>Never attempt to make Rice Krispy treats with PEEPS.
>
> -Leah Peah

This post, although helpful in a vague sort of way, was ignored
completely. Hundreds of people immediately ran out to buy Peeps and
Rice Krispies. They never returned home. This goes to show you the
     danger in avoiding free advice.

Another post following Sleepbot ZZ09.4 requested clarification, which
is always a perilous thing to do in alt.religion.kibology:

Okay!

It's "Peep", short for nothing in particular, but still chock-full of
marshmallowy goodness and chemicals.

Or maybe it's for the noise you get when you nuke them?

Nope, it's definitely Peeps
I read it in the "B5/DS9 Continuum" joint written by Steven Hawking,
JMS, and Gene Roddenbery (post-mortem)

he's right, you know. Roddenbery is definitely dead.

granted, Hawking smells sorta dead, but you wouldn't know that from
reading his excellent dissertation on the periodical shift in earth's
marshmallow field and pink sugar crystal singularities.

on the other hand, i'm having a hard time accepting JMS's explanation
that peeps last forever because 'the universe likes it that way'.

all in all it's a much better book than that piece of trash that
Hubbard and Shatner came out with in the late 70s. too many men with
long blonde hair and testosterone-filled guns for my liking. much
fonder of the more subtle, infiltrative approach that JMS will
certainly follow up with in season 5.

yeah, when those peeps get stuck into the System, there's not a damn
thing you can do to get them all out. viva l'B5!

With the above post, Sleepbot ZZ09.4 effectively ended the thread he
had begun in the groups he sent it to.

However, Sleepbot ZZ09.4's first post was re-posted (with no added
commentary, just a new .sig) to alt.fan.richard-nixon and
alt.sex.hello-kitty by froggy (Carlos May), also on 1997/11/11,
     with the Message-ID <64a5pi$415$2@uuneo.neosoft.com>.

On the next day, 1997/11/12, May's post was re-posted to alt.food.peeps,
alt.acme.exploding.newsgroup, and misc.misc by The Philosopher from Hell,
in Message-ID <64bt5k$chg$2@nntp-2.io.com>. Again, the only addition
was a new .sig. In the course of a day and a half, Sleepbot ZZ09.4's
original post had appeared in nine groups, posted by three people.

On November 12, the following post gathered together the errant groups
that the reposts had crossed to, and offered the definitive comment on
the nature of peeps, resulting in some debate:

Succinct. Concise. Perceptive, and to the point. The above was

In a sense they could be named Peeps. Peeping into other people's
minds.

Okay, so all that is the base, and it was all a lot of fun and
informative, but basically useless. Whatcha gonna do with it? I
continued to make passing references to peeps in some of my posts,
and soon found that they were fun to include as a distraction device
in posts to what I considered to be boring threads.
(See "Re: Religion on tv and mythology" 11-16-97

Yeah, what you said.

I didn't want to have to do this, but I guess I'll have to rally the

The KPS now had a purpose (to kill boring threads), a method (by peeping
them to death), a philosophy ("if it kills us. And vice-versa."), and a
rallying cry ("peep"). It also had a name, which would change within a
few posts. In this next post, it developed some mottoes:

Nah, that doesn't work if you do it on purpose.

The only way you can deliberately kill a thread is with an army of
invading marshmallow peeps.

I have not yet begun to peep!
Don't give up the peep!
I regret that I have but one peep to give for my country!
Give me liberty, or give me peeps!
Don't fire until you see the marshmallows of their peeps!
It takes a tough man to make a tender peep!
With great peep comes great responsibility!
It takes two hands to handle a peep!
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the peep!
Bounty! The quicker peeper upper!
PEEPS! YOU CAN'T EAT JUST ONE!

Elsewhere, other people were peeping. As each one did, I sent them
email welcoming them to the "Kamikaze Peep Squad" and asking them to
choose their rank and designation. At this point, the existence of the
group was known only to its members, and the identities of the members
were unknown to each other; a secret society kept secret from itself.

: Yeah, right!
: That Samuel Johnson was just a scruffy looking nerf herder.

No, it was Ben Johnson who said that (he was pretty good in SHE
WORE A YELLOW RIBBON and RED DAWN, BTW). Lyndon Johnson was the
nerf guy. I never did understand why he used those Beagles for
herding nerfs, though. Beagles aren't smart enough to herd nerfs.
Heck, Beagles aren't smart enough to herd peeps. (I just
heard a *peep*. Did you herd a peep? There aren't enough peeps
in this thread. You could make party decorations by stringing a
lot of peeps on thread, and hanging them all over. Be sure to
alternate the colours.)

ObMediaSF: Neelix majored in Alarmist Rhetoric.
ObLitSF: Heinlein invented Longist Rhetoric.
ObFlameBait: Ayn Rand killed ATLAS SHRUGGED with Over-long Rhetoric.

I think I'll go water my Pregnant Onions now.

peep.

As of this date, 12-9-97, the roster of the Kamikaze Peep Squad is as
follows (in roughly the same order as each person first peeped):

[DELETED AS UNIMPORTANT AS OF 4-14-98]

     UPDATES:

The membership of the Kamikaze Peep Squad has, since the posting of the
original version of this FAQ, grown to overwhelming proportions. Not
since the heyday of the lobotomized meowers has a group of single-minded
one-word posters achieved such overwhelming net-presence, spreading across
nearly a *dozen* different newsgroups, in almost two languages!

The Squad's official newsletter, the "Journal of Impossible Hopes and
Abandoned Dreams" (J.I.H.A.D.) is due to have its first issue emailed to
the Faithful Troops real *soon* now.

Usenet peeping reached an unparalleled peak during Easter week 1998.
Also, the number of KPS members who attended the weekly IRC KPS chat
(8:00 PM EST on Undernet channel #AltFanTom-Servo) on Sunday, April 12,
was so great that it cause a net-split, from which at least one server
(toronto.on.ca.undernet.org) did not recover until the following day.

Strangely, the use of the ".sig rank" has diminished greatly, causing a
general confusion as to who exactly is a KPS member. Perhaps it was an
affectation needed only during the initial growth spurt of the group, and,
as such, has rightly dropped away now that the KPS enters its adult phase.
But some KPS members miss it, including myself.

Also missed is "jdn", who has left the net to turn his attention towards
writing his novel. Never a KPS member, and in an effort to separate
himself from the peeping insanity, jdn proclaimed himself to be "Lord God
of the Anti-(Kamikaze peep Squad)". (In "Re: What was 'good' Kosh's point?"
article <662mno$83c@sjx-ixn6.ix.netcom.com>.) The Squad granted official
recognition of his Bizarro-like existence, because it was aware that jdn's
unstated goal was to not only participate in as many boring threads as
possible, but also to prolong them to the point where all the other
participants were ready and willing to tear their own fingers off in an
effort to extricate themselves. Since jdn has left the net it has become
common opinion that far too many people now posting to the Babylon 5 groups
have fingers. His services are missed by many.

And now, back to the front! May truth and justice be on our side as we
wade into the newsgroups in our never-ending battle with boring threads
     everywhere!

The above article was posted to Usenet on 4-13-98, and has been referenced in parts of other posts since that time. No one has posted any counter-history of the KPS, so you may assume that the above is canon. However, the "Updates" section is out of date. Specifically, "peeping" has grown somewhat more widespread, but has diminished in frequency. The release date for the first issue of the "Journal of Impossible Hopes and Abandoned Dreams" (J.I.H.A.D.) grows ever closer. JDN's presence on Usenet fluctuates, as per his whim and interests.
